“…(Ben) Murphy is in his fifth year of employment at Penske Racing South. The 29-year-old former Cumberland Valley graduate is a Design Engineer and is responsible for designing components for all of the team’s NASCAR Sprint Cup and Nationwide cars.
He is an in-house designer and even though he doesn’t travel with the teams, it doesn’t make him any less important. Murphy helped with the development of over 100 components on each one of Penske’s cars that will tour the 2.5-mile facility in excess of 200 mph…
Murphy spends most of his day at his desk using a 3-D modeling system called Pro Engineer (Creo). Once he completes a component, he makes a drawing for the machinist. If any further documentation is needed, he will make an assembly drawing to show how the part is put together.
Surprisingly, from the end of the previous season through Christmas, Murphy’s job isn’t that hectic. He still puts in 45 to 50 hours a week, but that number jumps to 60 after the first of the year as the team prepares equipment for the rest of NASCAR’s grueling 36-race schedule.
This off-season had a frantic twist. Murphy was responsible for designing fuel pumps, fuel filters, regulators and housings for the new fuel injection systems NASCAR implemented for the upcoming season…”
