PE Magazine discusses the strategies for engineers to design better products and interviews PTC’s Tom Shoemaker to highlight the new features and capabilities of CAD and PLM solutions that help engineers develop products to stay ahead of competition.
“Tom Shoemaker, vice president of solutions marketing for product lifecycle management company PTC, explains that product companies are dealing with the increasing desire of consumers for customized offerings. That makes critical factors, such as quality and regulation compliance, more difficult.
Ideally, Shoemaker explains, a company could ensure the viability of digital prototypes of product configurations before the physical prototype is assembled. For example, it’s faster and less costly for an agricultural equipment maker to learn of a design problem in which a loader attachment will interfere with the chassis before the prototype is assembled on a shop floor.
PTC’s design software Creo offers a new capability, ‘AnyBOM,’ that enables the generation of a 3D model from any bill of materials. This configuration can then be used to create order-specific manufacturing and service plans.
The model can be opened and validated within the company’s software, and run through various design simulations. The analytics capability can then determine whether the product will function, meets target cost or weight, and complies with regulations.
Like with other types of simulation, these capabilities give users the ability to perform trade-off analyses and make important business decisions, Shoemaker says.”
