In November we brought you Alexander Steegh, an entrepreneur whose bold ideas in electric mobility and collaboration with a Dutch design team created a sleek electric cruiser motorcycle called Orphiro.
A concept in 2010, Orphiro became a reality the following year. The Orphiro is one part Easy Rider and two parts Star Trek. The bike maintains the classic cruiser lines with comfortable positioning, feet forward, and hands up (think: Harley-Davidson) with an electric twist (batteries). Instead of a chrome plated V-twin and gas tank on the bike, there is a sleek-looking, one-piece enclosure that houses the five, 12V lithium ion batteries. A sexy and appealing design done in Creo Parametric.
Wes Siler for Popular Mechanics thinks the lack of sound becomes a bonus because “you can hear danger approaching and you become more a part of your environment, which enhances the fundamental two-wheeled experience of not sitting inside a car.”
Both the motorcycle and the modeling process behind it are on the leading edge of design. Design, prototype and testing were all performed in one step, bringing their motorcycle from dream to reality in a short 18 months.
Orphiro’s website calls its motorcycle “sustainable fun, a cool design, and comfortable driving” as well as “eye-catching.” Join Vince and Allison as they take a closer look on this episode of The Product Design Show:
