Design News: CAD Resurgence Fueled by Technology

“This younger, more skilled, and more mobile workforce is demanding tools that work the way they do,” Maher says. “One of the biggest, most profound shifts we’re seeing is that the data is traveling with workers to the field, the shop floor, the construction site, etc. That’s long been an ambition — now it’s a reality.”

In keeping with the new technology advances, Maher believes CAD will continue to evolve with lightweight, more easy-to-use, less expensive tools. She cites PTC’s efforts around the Creo line of apps tailored for specific tasks and specific roles as a harbinger of how CAD tools will continue to evolve. “People are looking at their CAD systems for more efficiencies,” she says. “They’re looking for better ways to create data and more ways to use the data. Most important, CAD customers are visual people and they want to interact with visual data, including 3D, simulations, and point cloud data.”

Design News: Putting a New Face on CAD Interoperability

“New visualization and collaboration tools that foster the exchange of lightweight models (meaning 3D geometry without all the design intelligence) have been instrumental in helping companies better exchange multi-CAD data without the hangover of traditional platforms. In addition, new technologies advancing the concept of direct modeling, along with reorienting design workflows so that only critical parts of a design, not full assemblies, are translated between parametric-based offerings, are other tactics easing the interoperability burden.”

Design News: PTC’s Direct Modeling Strategy

“What’s important about this 18.0 release is that we’ve made tighter integration for our legacy customers so they can continue using the core engineering system, but still benefit from the other Creo Apps, like advanced FEA tools,” says Teague. “Data can now move back and forth … and we’re creating a process that enables both direct and parametric modeling whereas before they were separate tools.” To create this tighter integration, PTC leveraged its Granite kernel so solids can be sent back and forth between the two systems.”
